How GFT and Itaú are using AI to accelerate banking’s cloud transition

By November 3, 2026

Banks are increasingly expected to deliver digital services faster, but much of the technology supporting their operations was built decades ago. Updating that infrastructure without disrupting transactions, settlements, or other essential processes remains a significant challenge for financial institutions across Latin America.

In Brazil, Itaú Unibanco and GFT Technologies are applying artificial intelligence to one part of that modernization process. Their joint solution has reduced system migration times by up to 70% and accelerated project delivery by as much as 3.3 times during its initial implementation, according to the companies.

The project focuses on moving the bank’s batch systems to the cloud. These systems run scheduled processes that handle large volumes of transactions and support daily banking operations, including account closing, settlements, and reconciliations.

The initiative is part of Itaú’s broader platform modernization program, which began in 2018.

How AI is supporting Itaú’s cloud migration

The model combines Batch2Cloud, a tool developed by GFT in collaboration with Itaú, with Wynxx, GFT’s generative AI ecosystem.

The solution helps identify modernization opportunities, map the complexity of existing technology environments, and estimate the work required to migrate systems. This is intended to make the process more predictable while preserving the business rules embedded in legacy applications.

AI agents handle repetitive tasks, accelerate technical analysis, and assist with code generation and validation. Human specialists from both companies remain responsible for technical decisions, system architecture, and governance.

The project also incorporates Code Understanding, a tool developed by Zup Innovation, a technology company within Itaú’s group. It helps teams interpret legacy code and complements the work performed by the AI agents.

Modernizing critical infrastructure without disrupting banking services

Migrating applications developed over several decades involves more than transferring workloads to cloud infrastructure. Banks must also preserve the logic behind existing processes and maintain the reliability of systems that support their daily operations.

For Itaú, the modernization effort is intended to improve its ability to adapt processes, develop products, and respond to customer needs while maintaining the stability of its technology platform.

“Modernizing our legacy systems and migrating to the cloud are two pillars of Itaú’s technology strategy to remain customer-focused, offering what customers need, when they need it, and with the agility they expect,” said Douglas Santos, technology superintendent at Itaú Unibanco.

GFT sees the results as a basis for applying Batch2Cloud to other organizations facing similar modernization challenges.

“Batch2Cloud, from Wynxx, represents a new way of approaching this transformation by combining artificial intelligence, automation, and specialized knowledge in a model capable of accelerating delivery without compromising governance or quality,” said Saulo Santos, business vice president at GFT Technologies.

The collaboration illustrates how financial institutions can use AI to accelerate the modernization of critical software infrastructure, while keeping technical oversight and operational continuity at the center of the process.
